All of the concepts discussed in Soul Mates are applicable to the Twin Flame. But the relationship goes a little deeper.
In popular New Age culture, the "Twin Flame" is a single soul that split into two souls and reunites to live happily ever after. Living happily ever after is often not the case. Many Twin Flames never get the chance to fulfill their joint soul mission because they are not spiritually or emotionally mature enough to do so. And so many people come to me believing that the person they are with, or the person they lost was their Twin Flame because the relationship was intense or their sexual relationship was the best they experienced. This is definitely NOT the case.
I can’t say I know for a fact that Twin Flames are essentially the same soul split in half as is the current definition. But their soul essence, is in fact the same. An alternative term might be "Essence Twin". This differs from a soul mate as their mission is different. They are here on this planet to transmute negativity and the dark forces and move the planet into a more spiritual existence and individual and planetary ascension. The Twin Flame mission is more universal, while the soul mate relationship is more personal.
The Twin Flame relationship is not a human love experience. It is a relationship that exists in the higher planes and transcends time and space. It is a union of mirror souls.
Both souls may not even be incarnated at the same time. Yet, they will always be aware of each other on a soul level. There will always be a longing for the twin.
Where did the concept of twin flames come from? There are many references in ancient literature. The Egyptian Book of the dead dates from approximately 2500 BCE and is a funerary text. It indicates that the twin flames meet while alive, and spend lifetimes trying to get back together.
Ancient Vedic texts indicate similar stories. Examples are Shiva and Shakti, the male and female opposites when united form one soul. See also Radha and Krishna.
In the Bible, Adam and Eve is a classic twin flame story. Originally one soul in Adam, God made Eve from a piece of Adam. Since God is spirit, and Adam was made in the image of God, Adam and Eve were originally one spirit. When they ate of the apple, they were separated.
The most interesting story of the twin flame relationship and perhaps the one that gives us our current definition, comes from Plato’s Symposium. Plato wrote that the original humans were of a very high energy and presented a threat to the gods. Thus, each one was divided in half to limit their power. This splitting of the soul caused much pain and suffering and always led to them searching for the other.
Elizabeth Clare Prophet was a spiritual leader and prolific author. She founded the Summit Lighthouse and The Church Universal and Triumphant in 1975. She brought the teachings of the Ascended Masters (highly evolved beings who left the wheel of incarnation on the earth plane but remained to help humanity grow and ascend) like St. Germain, El Morya, Jesus, Mary. She advanced the concept of twin flames in her teachings and through her marriage to Mark Prophet, who she believed to be her twin flame.
